The SysAdmin Network

No more hiding in the server room

Before the flood begins, can I suggest we (members) discuss the inevitable.....

Lesse... Social Network, SysAdmins, Geeks. Yup, that's three big draws for the head-hunters (besides a bunch of other things).

Can I suggest that the rulers of this little part of the web decide now (or in the immediate future) what the groundrules are going to be regarding their presence here?

I'd imagine that having a forum ("Trading Floor") where commodities can be exchanged would be a good idea. I see a need for:
1) Jobs Offered
2) Jobs Wanted
3) Gigs (short-term contracting) offered
4) Gigs (short-term contracting) wanted
5) Physical items wanted. (Got a KIM-I computer to give away?)
6) Physical items offered.

I think that would give people a reasonable way to express these needs without cluttering up other forum areas or threads. That's one aspect of things that might need planning for.

The other is the screamingly obvious problem of reminding people that software and ideas made available here, beit script, binary, or disc must be free of all encumbrances. No copyright violations nor violiations of propriatary rules can be permitted.

Just my $1.35 (+tax, -inflation, -international rate exchanges) = $0.02

I forgot.... Add a place for rants... Rules being... Rant without naming names or pointing fingers.
Keep the language clean. Have a good time.
Thanks for your thoughts, Michael (and sorry for the delay in getting back to you about this). We thought about how best to organize the forum posts, as you can see if you look at the categories, but I am sure we haven't got it right yet!

We've made a few changes now in response to your post. The Forum Rules highlight a little bit better the importance of keeping everything legal.

As for what categories would be useful, does anyone have further suggestions? Would you prefer the default view to be by category or most recent thread?

I’ll admit that we hadn’t even considered the issue of headhunters. It sounds like you would rather embrace their presence than try to keep recruitment activities off the forum. We will form a policy on this, but it would be helpful to hear from more members what they would like. Recruiters: allow or ban?

I personally don't care one way or the other but I am sure that no matter how hard we try to prevent it, there will be people/organizations posting "Help Wanted" type ads wherever they want. I am just suggesting we put in the gutters now before the rain starts. ;)

Excellent analogy. Keeping with the "ideas here are free of encumbrances", I may have to steal that

:-)
Sounds like some excellent ideas, Michael.
I would definitely like to be able to split my blog posts into categories.
I think the main page should be as-is showing the most recent posts, but the ability to have seperate areas for different topics would be good, for example Exchange, Active Directory, Cisco e.t.c
It would also be good to have a requests section, so that if someone is having a particular problem they can ask for help, a particular powershell command or VPN config request for example.
Thanks for the ideas, Rob. Obviously, we're still finding our feet a little with this Ning stuff. Organizing blog posts by category is not something we get out-of-the-box (though, as you've discovered, tagging is available), so unless anyone can offer us advice on that, we'll have to beg for your patience for a little while!
We've also added a category for "Problems and Requests" to the forum to help organize requests for help, as you suggest.
More ideas, folks? Keep 'em coming!
