The SysAdmin Network

No more hiding in the server room

On February 6th, the SysAdmin Network will celebrate its first birthday…. And a busy year it’s been! We've had:

and that's not to mention some great discussion.

In other words, we’ve got a lot to celebrate. So I’ve been researching how to give a 1-year old a birthday party, and here are some top tips I’ve garnered:

“Your one-year-old may be fearful of strangers, and strange or new places….Her social network will be small and intimate and that's how she likes it.”

(Not so sure about that!)

“She'll appreciate a few simple games, such as Row the Boat or Round and Round the Garden with plenty of tickles, too.”

So who has a better idea for how to celebrate? Anyone up for a rousing round of ‘Row your Boat’? We have a small budget available....

I vote for buying a gerbil cannon.
And there I had you down as the peaceful kind :-). Failing the gerbil cannon, there's always the Rapid Fire 20!
Wow! Okay, I retract my vote for a gerbil cannon. Plus, after a while, the area pet stores are bound to get suspicious when you keep buying out all of their rodents.
So, in reference to the digest email that was sent out the other day:

"Do you want more advice on solutions? (Like the Wikis in the Workplace thread)"
That's always good. I like to hear what other people are using and how they're using it. So far the most influential bit of information I've received through this site was from Isaac and his ZFS webcast. That caused me to spend about a week neglecting my real work and diving into unified storage information. I'm much better equipped to design storage solutions now.

"Opinion/analysis pieces? (Like Resisting SaaS For IT Management)"
That too is always good. I like articles that could be used as flame bait. Fire is a refining thing, is it not? Opinions are explosive tender, no? Techies are nothing if we're not casting off sparks and embers from our own blazing egos. That's a recipe for edifying discussion if I've ever seen one. Either that or a Texas chainsaw massacre.

"Funnies? (Like the SysAdmin drinking game Wet your Whistle)"
Meh. It's always fun... but there are plenty of places to get my fix of tech funnies. XKCD and TheDailyWTF come to mind. I don't see that as being The SysAdmin Network's strong suit. Not that it couldn't be, but it would seem that we'd need some major retrofitting to get that off the ground and flying.

"Product reviews and info? (Like Guide to Compaq Servers)"
So long as they're an in-the-trenches review and don't wreak of marketing spiel. The Compaq Server guide thread seemed to fit more under the "Advice on Solutions" heading above though. When I think of "product reviews" I think of analysts/pundits like Paul Thurott or Ed Bott. That may or may not be a good thing.

I think that more of the first two headings would be teh proverbial pwn. Of course, I realize that it's the Royal We that's responsible for stuff like that. If I want to see it, I've got to roll up my sleeves and get to clacking on the keyboard. If only I could tear myself away from these stupid iPhone games that beset me so I could get to some more productive pursuits. CURSE YOU STORM8!!!
Looks like we made 500 users! Awesome! Congratulations Elizabeth and Michael (and all you other sysadmins!)
