How do you guys communicate what your / the IT dept. is up to?

Do you have a page on your intranet which gives info on current projects? How about a little news section on the helpdesk? possibly even a blog or twitter account that broadcasts major outages or news?

I'm starting to think that a lot of what goes on in an IT dept is seen as black magic and voodoo done behind closed doors away from the end users. I also think the average IT dept would get a lot more credit or even have an easier time from the end users if they knew that you were working 50+ hour weeks doing X and Y to keep things going whilst also progressing projects A through E.

What do you guys think?

True, but when we're also working 50+ hour weeks we don't have the time and or motivation to blog about it, and when we do sometimes we just want to let loose had have a complain/rant about stuff that our clients possibly shouldn't hear about.
I know what you mean but surely if you ARE working that hard / long then it's a better idea to let the general userbase / management know that you are? If they're aware you're working so hard then in my experience users will usually cut you a lot of slack. Management have even been known to try and do something about bad situations .....
I'm completely with you about needing to be more visible to users, but actually getting around to doing it is another story. I even like the idea of a private Twitter account for members of your company to watch. Or perhaps a blog on the intranet. Or maybe singing telegrams to the executives.
What I've found works best is when you have an IT Manager that does less of the project and/or technical work, but is a great manager. They can then follow what their staff are working and write the updates on a company intranet that the rest of the company can follow.
My company is small, I use my time wisely and drive to each location and spread the info by word of mouth. Eats up a good 2 hrs daily.
