The SysAdmin Network

No more hiding in the server room

Hi,

I was looking at the gift store this morning. That's sort of neat, though the gifts I saw were a little...strange :-) Particularly for sysadmins.

Any chance we can customize the item selection?

I'm probably being dense again but -- gift store?
This is a "social networking" site. Sort of. Know how you can give dumb facebook gifts, if you want? Same sort of thing.

I don't really care one way or another, but my thought was that if we have gifts, they could be sysadmin related.
Matt Simmons: Know how you can give dumb facebook gifts, if you want? Same sort of thing.
Ok, now I understand, I did say I was dense.
Need more coffee.

edit: Doh! I just saw the gift store link/banner a few minutes ago.
Hi, Isaac --

I just want to add that Michael and I knew nothing about this whole gift thing until it was plastered across the top of the site! I'm not sure I get the fun of it yet, but maybe I am just failing to grok this social networking thing fully....

Suggestions are welcome, though, for good gifts for the network. Or we can turn it off completely. We're happy to let the Voice of the People decide. :-)
I'm not a big fan of the gifts / games / whatever part of the social network. I like the conversations, but I agree. People should decide. Maybe a poll? Or an "opt in" kind of thing.
So I looked at the gifts and they're pretty lame. If they stay around then I would vote for a set that was SA related in some way. Don't really have any suggestions though, just echoing Matt.
I dunno. I think the cheeseburger and "Gangsta" goblet have some pretty obvious SysAdmin connotations. Everything else, however, looks like something that my 14 year old niece would send me on FaceBook. Except I don't have a 14 year old niece and I vehemently eschew FaceBook. I vote we ditch it altogether if possible. Seriously... $2USD for 100 credits? So sending someone a picture of a smiling blue elephant will cost me $1.50? Someone at ning is high. If I was going to waste 2 bucks there's plenty of things in the iTunes app store that I'd rather buy.
Agreed... yet FB do it, and somehow people actually spend money on them as well! But I guess most of us aren't that target market :-).

Anyway, well done to Michael for giving them the kick!
Gifts have now gone. I really hate them, and don't think they have a place on a professional network. Plus they just appeared, without Elizabeth or I 'turning them on'. Killing them gave me a joy rush this morning.

If anyone has any strong feelings for them coming back, then (grrrrr....) please post below. However I may resort to sending the boys round.
