Yes, we've celebrated it! Nothing as extreme as a day off, but they got three cheers from the company. I'll post a picture of the 'Happy SysAdmin Day' cake a little later :-) Also, there's a jumping internal forum discussion about the great things…

Okay, so my blog post about 48Upper was published: http://thenubbyadmin.com/2010/06/23/hp-says-it-people-need-to-get-social/ I actually got a response from an HP person in the comments. He seemed to agree with my observations. Does anyone think I w…

.... I had no idea and somewhere deep in my soul I really wish I still didn't. My experiences with HP haven't been fantastic so far, so I have to wonder what www.48upper.com will bring.

Oddly, I have a post on my blog scheduled concerning this upcoming community. Stay tuned this Wednesday...

Anyone come across 48Upper from HP yet?    It seems to be a service (currently in beta) that lets IT professionals talk to each other about their issues, while giving them some tools to filter out sensitive details about their companies.    Naturall…

Hi, Richard. Just a quick comment on the Outlook password: it is not a proper password, it is actually just a (fairly weak) hash. This means that many different possible passwords will unlock the PST file, which is why it is pretty straightforward…

Hey that's really good news about Office 2010! As soon as we review our MS licensing agreement (again) and move over to something a little more long term, I will definitely be getting involved in some of that. :o)

I am testing Office 2010 for roll-out to our Enterprise, and if Exchange 2010 is as good as the Office version, it will be a winner. They finally fixed a lot of issues with speed and bulk that plagued both 2003 and 2007. Here's hoping that the same…

Our company has just upgraded to exchange yesterday, we are the Beta users, I don't have much to say right now, but will let you know soon .

We had problems with 2010 beta too - it wouldn't play with other existing version of Exchange (nothing for 2003 and needed a service pack for 2007 which wasn't out yet, IIRC). The final version sits okay with 2003 in our brief testing so far.. (not…

In my recent quick testing (install a DC, install an Exchange server, send email between two accounts!), it seems REALLY nice when combined with Outlook 2010 (the Room Finder is an awesome feature! People will LOVE us in IT again :) ). The managemen…

Hey, we all have to have hobbies. 59. Not counting appliances and services. Can we say, 'crowded market,' kids? (There may be a few which are the same product under the marketing -- I certainly haven't actually investigated them all!!)

I'm sure Michael meant to put in the disclaimer that he (and I) work for Red Gate.... And now, in the interest of fairness, I'll mention a few others that we come across when we're out talking to Sys Admins. Symantec is really the 800lb gorilla in…

I'm really looking forward to 2010. There are a lot of great positives (coming from 2K3): major IO improvements, OWA and user self service tools(message tracking, etc), Exchange Management shell (powershell). Value is greatly improved because: 1) Ca…

Well, the RTM version of 2010 should be better, but..... The SP1 beta is coming out in June. Could be worth hanging tight until then.

SysAdmin Network – what’s it all about?

There is no shortage of sites offering technical advice and news to Sys Admins, so why a social network?

It is true, there are plenty of technical sites (eg. Microsoft TechNet, TechTarget sites like SearchStorage and SearchSecurity), but in contrast to the Linux community, Microsoft-centric sites tend to leave me… Continue

I forgot to say "Thanks!" for the webinar this morning and answering my questions. Good stuff.

Thanks for the welcome. Sure, throw my blog up on the front if you think it's worthy of the site. Most of it is just general ramblings, so not sure how it'll stand up to some of the others on here :)

Indeed. I feel like I'm doing some kind of bombing run when I make these greeting rounds. Just call me The Carpet Bomber of Friendliness.

Ah..

For next year, the Large Installation part of LISA is pretty much a misnomer. From what they tell me, large installations are represented, but so are medium and small. In fact, I'm attending a workshop called microLISA specifically for small infrastructures.

If you'd like, I can get you in touch with the right USENIX people who could probably get you the demographics for the event.

Let me know if you're interested!

Elizabeth, it looks like you're RSVP'd to LISA in Baltimore! Are you really going to be there?

Elizabeth, first off thanks for the comment. I've gotten some good advice from other admins (a few are on here). I've got a plan, now it's just taking everything one more step at a time. Unfortunately, I'm at a brink where if I bag one more bag of groceries or make one more Baconator, I'll snap!

Second, and most of all, Thank you for creating a site like this. I've been wanting to be a SysAdmin for going on 4 years and I've been rather surprised at how few sites there are for such a techie job. At first it was just a couple Networking sections on various PC and IT forums. Between ServerFault, PlanetSysAdmin aggregator, and this awesome site you and Michael have made, it's awesome. Not just great for a SysAdmin-in-training like myself, but for those in the trenches and livin' the life.

Thank you for the site, and Thank you for the warm welcome.

(P.S. - I do have IT related photos, but my last 2 jobs have very modest IT needs.)

Well, we're not completely happy with what we have for monitoring like most folks I suspect. Zenoss just got moved from the back burner toward the front, so I might comment on our early experience (mostly good) comparing it to (our particular) Nagios setup.
