Mine was a bit of a strange and certainly nonlinear path to IT support's hallowed halls. I went through uni on a mechanical engineering degree but after two years I became disillusioned with the course but stuck with it through the next year as it…

Update: After using Dokuwiki for about a month or so now I can honestly say I'm loving it! For documentation and general information holding / sharing a wiki is a great way to go. With the search provider bolting in to FF + IE then you don't even…

For the very few cases where we need an older printer on the network, I use a print server like the ones offered by Netgear. I've found the bigger ones (ie: designed for multiple printers) to be much more reliable than the smaller "single printer" o…

I've been using RIS and WDS for several years. In my current environment, I have Windows Server 2008 WDS and maintain 3 different images for Dell laptops (several models), Dell desktops (several models), and Dell Servers. Whenever there have been ch…

There is tutorial with MDT. You could download and install in your lab to test the features show in the tutorial. It can run on any version Windows from XP to Server 2k8-R2. I am very happy with the MDT 2010 and with you using SCCM you can utilize t…

We're starting to use SCCM - previously relying on ghost images per model, the number of which has recently ballooned! We're not yet using the MDT, primarily because I've not come across a decent tutorial as to what it'll give us extra :)

If there's no money in the purse, you might want to look into the FOG project for an imaging server. It also has more features such as the ability to push down non-destructive Memtest and ClamAV images, scheduling and more. It roxors. =)

I use the Microsoft Deployment Toolkit (MDT2010) for deployments and SCCM2007. I have about 500 systems in production. With the toolkit I imported the media used for the Windows install to deployment workbench. I then add the drivers for each model…

Right now, we're using ghost, but I want to deploy something more flexible. I have been looking at the FOG Project. It seems interesting. I just have to get my manager to go along.

What changes are their for Windows 7? Does Server 2008 allow you to clone? We have nothing in place really (winpe image on DVD) so please...I am listening tell me what is out there. I am looking for all the Microsoft possibilities of how to do this.…

We have about 300 machines here and since our corporate sell off/take over we've been doing the Windows Deployment over the network using pixy booting. Our new image is pretty standard. XP pro with MS Office 2k3. Nothing special really... all our ol…

Awwww, that brings back some memories! :o) unfortunately we disposed of all our HP machines that are so old and big they had wheels. I'll try and get a pic of the phone system though as it's running on a squashed 386 and hasn't been rebooted in abou…

I support about a dozen PCs. It's a small office to say the least. =)

Ah.. But that's a feature, right? Besides, that is also improper use of equipment. Mechanical pencils will require retraining, and that means scheduling classes, the inevitable people that will not 'get it' and require hand-holding, requests to Fi…
