Wes,  I have used SyncBack ( ) with some success for having those users that just can't seem to back up files that they might need.  The software allows you to back up any files and folders that you choose, and has scheduling to…

I have been installing and using as much software as possible... And documenting the processes, so that I understand how it works. Writing a document listing the software and applications that you have used, and reference your own install documents…

More information first.... Is this a Windows or Linux DNS server resolving these requests? Single subnet or multi? Static IP addressing, or DHCP?

John McGrath replied to Michael Francis's discussion 'Exchange 2010 and PST files - what to do?'
We are currently using Enterprise Vault, and it is pretty good for Email Archival. The biggest issue we have had is importing PST's that are currupt (Go figure, that never happens...), and users losing archived email. Making sure that the…

John McGrath replied to Phil Shannon's discussion 'Patching Production Windows Servers'
This is where 'Defense in Depth' comes into play. Patching is a necessary task, and while testing and setting schedules are best practice, there are still time windows between patch release from the vendor and patch application. Zero and…

I agree with Adam... Choose to do something that is not work related: Get outside and walk around the block, driving to the store, etc. I take a walk to the corner and make a point to talk to someone that is not related to my work.

Yes to number 2. I would be interested in how you implemented it, and how it is working for you. Obviously, I have not done this before, and therefore would not have any testing ideas at this time.

John McGrath replied to Graycat's discussion 'Office 2010'
I used Office 2010 for the last 30 days, and I have to admit that I liked it much better than 2007. The ribbon interface takes getting used to, but it seems to be better organized than 2007 version. The interface itself is snappier, and the Word…

I am testing Office 2010 for roll-out to our Enterprise, and if Exchange 2010 is as good as the Office version, it will be a winner. They finally fixed a lot of issues with speed and bulk that plagued both 2003 and 2007. Here's hoping that the…

Knowledge Bases

It has been an interesting two weeks for me, and as I reflect on it, it reminds me of a posting that Matt of Standalone SysAdmin had made March 4th.

Gaining knowledge is imperative in our field. That is the best way to stay current. Technology changes so quickly, and we stay knowledgeable, because customers ask us about it. I had a friend suggest that IT workers are like the monks…

The Biggest Loser Contest

We have an annual Biggest Loser contest here at work, and I am going to represent the IT group this time around.

I have noticed that some of us do not handle the stresses of the job and/or are getting older (chronologically at least..), and need to shed some of the weight that we might have gained over the winter months.

When I am not at work, I am still thinking of work, or reading, studying, researching about topics related to work. Most of this is done reading a book, a blog,… Continue
