Agree completely. NetApp being a particularly guilty party in my experience. I needed storage but only had about £12K to spend. Didn't particularly want to look stupid and suggest a model only to find out it costs £50K.

Matt Not wanting to confuse things for you, but I'd suggest looking at Sun x64 servers as well - they have some pretty powerful models too (though not sure they have 48 cores). I wouldn't expect to pay anything like list price…

We also have a backup system that isn't great at virtualisation support and this is our proposed way forward. Our backup software is ARCserve (for Unix - not Windows as we have a mixed environment). We currently backup to a Sun SL48 tape…

Hey Matt. Most people assume that Sun kit is very expensive. I've found that our Sun kit (Blade 6000, X4100 M2 rack mount, StorageTek 2540 arrays) to be very competitive with the HP and Dell kit that some of our other business units use,…

Yes - very strong. To be honest, it was only there while we built it. Now in a customer rack somewhere in London.

With 12+ years Linux experience, you'll have no problems, as long as you understand that OpenSolaris is not Linux and that some things will be different. Set your expectations appropriately and you'll enjoy the ride. I've been a…

I'm a member but only joined last week. I also joined SAGE at the same time. The mailing lists look interesting but I'll wait and see before giving it a verdict. JR

Simon Lye replied to Julian Regel's discussion 'On call allowance'
At my previous employer (a large bank), I did on-call work. The system worked like this: - We were paid a flat rate for every week we were on call, irrelevant of whether we received any calls or not. This was compensation for the inconvenience of…

On call allowance

We're looking at expanding our service to cover 24/7 operation. We don't currently have any on-call process in place. My question is for those who currently work in an environment where you receive an on-call allowance. How is the on-call allowance calculated? What is the level of expectation (are you expected to drive in if necessary, simply take a call, or fix remotely?)? Do you have a shift system or are you paid the allowance and then you're on call 24/7/365?I've been asked to put a…See More

One option is to use Connected Backup software, it's a central VPN automatic backup solution for Laptops, I guess from IBM. However, it needs an investment in the infrastructure, if you basically consider backing up say: 20GB for each user and…
