Friday night, I went to an amazing party with 50 sysadmins in New York City. Our party was sponsored by Etsy, who picked up the bar tab. It was an amazingly fun time, and I think everyone enjoyed it. I haven't heard from anyone who didn't, anyway.…

Hi all,  I wanted to let you know about a project that I'm starting today. It's a centralized clearinghouse for sysadmin related events.  I've got a blog entry describing it, but essentially, I want people to submit th

We were 100% blackberries until one fateful Thanksgiving, mine died while I was remote. We had AT&T, and the store was out of blackberries, but had iPhones, and I needed _something_, so guess what I got? Now, a year and a half later, we're 75% iPho…

I do some DB work. Basically, I keep the Oracle and Postgres servers happy, unless there's a REAL problem, then my boss (who acts as the DBA when he's not programming) fixes it. Unless he's on vacation, then I start making miracles.

I should have also answered your question about service groups, but left it out, sorry. Service Groups used to be strictly for display purposes, but you can do some other things with them in the 3_0 branch. You'll want to read over the next couple…

Hi Graycat, Thanks for looking over the layout. As for dealing with services en mass, I create hostgroups to lump the hosts together, then I apply that hostgroup to the service, rather than a long list of server names. For instance, *ALL* of my L…

I'm getting ready to do something similar, although I'm coming from a Juniper, but I suspect the implementation is going to play nicely. Incidentally, which model are you going with? I've only got the budget for the 5505, but I'm picking up the 50 u…

Short story: I found a computer laying in a field. Long story: I got my first computer in 9th grade. This was circa 1994. It was an IBM Aptiva 486DX2/66 with 4 MB of RAM. It even had a CD-ROM. My mom got it from Wal-Mart with her tax refund check…

Yep. It's a good reminder of why we need to be paranoid!

People actually read the emails their providers send? Amazing! Seriously though, with sufficient resources and patience, it wouldn't be that hard to compromise even the most stringent networks. The more directed an attack is, the greater chance it…

Hello everyone. I wanted to make sure that everyone here knew about the New Jersey-area sysadmin conference, and that registration is now open!  If you're in NJ, NY, CT, or PA, then this conference is convenient to you, and you can meet some really…

Rise of the hippopotamus

This isn't a particularly sysadmin-y entry, but that's ok.

I've noticed lately that hippopotamuses...err hippopotami(?) are on the rise in the public consciousness. Last year, my wife's grandmother entertained us at Christmas by singing "I want a hippopotamus for christmas". The fact that she threatened to do it for the 6 months leading up to it may have been the cause of her getting something like a dozen hippo-related gifts that year.

If you watch American TV, you might have seen the E-Trade… Continue

Interview with Tom Limoncelli

This is cut and paste from my entry at Standalone Sysadmin, but I'm excited about it, nonetheless.

I was also lucky enough to be chosen to interview Tom Limoncellli about his new training course at LISA '09,… Continue

Going well. 2 more quarters of school left, and Network+ certification in there somewhere. Hopefully my resume will be looking a little better within the next year. How's the book going?

Actually, yes, if you could put me in touch with the Chief Usenix Bods in Charge of Demographics, I'd be grateful!

Feel free to do so privately..... Thanks!

I wish I were going to be at LISA!

But unfortunately, it's just that if you add an event you're automatically put down as attending it *(and I neglected to take myself off). Doh!

I'm still trying to think creatively about why my company has to send me, but sadly we don't deal very much with >Large< information systems.... hmm.....

Thanks for the welcome Matt! I've always wondered why someone hasn't made a site like this before. If someone did, I never found it in all my searching for anything SysAdmin.

Thanks for the invite. I have it on my calendar. It just depends on whether or not I have to work late that day. I will forward it to a few others.
