It might be worth creating an Event for this, too. You should be able to do that, but let me know if it needs Admin intervention!

I use Netscreens for this. The most stable ones that I've found are the 5GTs, which are a generation old. The SSG5s have an impressive feature set, but I've had trouble with them dropping database connections, and I'm in the middle of…

Matt Simmons replied to Graycat's discussion 'To blade or not to blade, that is the question'
I'm at 80% blades, but they run 99% of all of my critical services. In my experience, and from what I've learned from the other people I've talked to, blade chassis are solid. They're well engineered, they're inherently…

Friday night, I went to an amazing party with 50 sysadmins in New York City. Our party was sponsored by Etsy, who picked up the bar tab. It was an amazingly fun time, and I think everyone enjoyed it. I haven't heard from anyone who didn't,…

SysAdmin Calendar

Hi all, I wanted to let you know about a project that I'm starting today. It's a centralized clearinghouse for sysadmin related events. I've got a blog entry describing it, but essentially, I want people to submit their meetups, conferences, and whatever, and then you can go to one place (or subscribe to one calendar) and…See More

Going well. 2 more quarters of school left, and Network+ certification in there somewhere. Hopefully my resume will be looking a little better within the next year. How's the book going?

We were 100% blackberries until one fateful Thanksgiving, mine died while I was remote. We had AT&T, and the store was out of blackberries, but had iPhones, and I needed _something_, so guess what I got? Now, a year and a half later, we're…

Matt Simmons replied to Michael Francis's discussion 'Full time SysAdmin or part time DBA too?'
I do some DB work. Basically, I keep the Oracle and Postgres servers happy, unless there's a REAL problem, then my boss (who acts as the DBA when he's not programming) fixes it. Unless he's on vacation, then I start making miracles.

I should have also answered your question about service groups, but left it out, sorry. Service Groups used to be strictly for display purposes, but you can do some other things with them in the 3_0 branch. You'll want to read over the next…

Hi Graycat, Thanks for looking over the layout. As for dealing with services en mass, I create hostgroups to lump the hosts together, then I apply that hostgroup to the service, rather than a long list of server names. For instance, *ALL* of my…

Rise of the hippopotamus

This isn't a particularly sysadmin-y entry, but that's ok.

I've noticed lately that hippopotamuses...err hippopotami(?) are on the rise in the public consciousness. Last year, my wife's grandmother entertained us at Christmas by singing "I want a hippopotamus for christmas". The fact that she threatened to do it for the 6 months leading up to it may have been the cause of her getting something like a dozen hippo-related gifts that year.

If you watch American TV, you might… Continue

Ok Matt, you got me.
I couldn't figure out what to put in the "Favorite Tech" field and was repulsed by the suggestions the webpage gave me so, what the heck, I didn't figure anyone would really get it quickly. Wow was I wrong! :) "Shiny!"

Thanks for the welcome Matt! I've always wondered why someone hasn't made a site like this before. If someone did, I never found it in all my searching for anything SysAdmin.
