I was thinking about starting a sysadmin-network IRC channel... for about 2 seconds. Then I realized how redundant that would be. I know there are plenty of SysAdmin / Network Admin IRC channels out…

I work from home on multiple jobs and projects. What is this "days" thing you speak of? My time is segmented into "awake" and "asleep". I just wish someone would turn off that big, bright light outside. Someone leaves it on for like 145 whole hours…

APC creates unobtrusive equipment racks that look like furniture.

This is basically a copy and paste from my own blog, but I wanted to get some targeted feedback from fellow admins on this topic.

Plenty of admins/consultants have to deal with small offices and branch offices that need a server or three, a firewall and maybe some switches. But where to put them? Usually those devices end up being bunkmates with mops and 5-gallon containers of Janitor in a Drum. However, APC has created their NetShelter CX series that looks like an unobtrusive pieces of office… Continue

Small Office Disaster Recovery == Disaster (--Recovery)

The office is small. Really small. So small that you can answer the front door with one hand while you use the other hand to spray roach repellent around the back door. The mobile workforce that the office directly supports is equally small and I'm partially responsible for supporting both of them. I say "partially" because I work part time... on a volunteer basis... from 1,000 miles away. The remaining part of the time that I'm not helping the office the users create their own "solutions". By "… Continue

I'm new and I'm creating Zombies

Being a new member here, I feel a bit like a kid in a candy store. Except I'm hypoglycemic. So I feel like a kid in a GNC store with a coupon for $5 off BioChem Whey Protein. Excuse me while I resurrect dead threads and dig up some zombie blog posts with my comments. Except my Zombies don't want brains. They want desktop manufacturers to stop offering PS/2 keyboards and mice.

If anyone can explain why PS/2 equipment hasn't yet been banned by the UN, WTO, EU and FCCC please comment.

Ah yes... I've never tried to integrate a Mac environment with a Windows environment before. I can imagine that would be quite a lot more complicated!

Hi Wesley.

I work in a small company so there are only about 10 users and they all have Macs. However, I try to use best practices for this which I believe would be totally applicable in a much larger company. I have an Apple server which is the departmental server, and this runs OpenDirectory for user authentication plus lots of other things such as email, iChat (Jabber), group calendar, DNS, DHCP, software updates, intranet, wiki, mobile homes (roaming profiles) etc. When I first set this up it clearly hadn't been tested properly by Apple and was riddled with bugs and thus a nightmare. Now it's all up and running and a lot of the bugs have been ironed out, so it generally all runs very smoothly.

Most of my IP Telephony experience has been with 3Com and ShoreTel. Great interview with the Sysadmin that pulled out AV use on his network.

I work for a consulting shop that is a Microsoft Gold partner, so my product of choice is Office Communications Server. That being said having to integrate OCS with all the various telephony systems, I have touched just about everything Cisco, Avaya, Nortel, etc.
