I like dansguardian. I've had it installed on any old hardware, and worked good supporting around 100 people. Really customizable filtering, but the config is 100% linux config files, which can be a positive or negative, depending how you feel…

oh.. and if the switch supports it, try turning on jumbo frames for each device from end to end for better performance. And if you want to emulate a production system, use 2 nics in each server, and 2 gigabit switches, connected to 2 ports or nics…

A gig switch is a gig switch if that's all you need.. Should be fine.. But beware.. Openfiler is nice.. but I don't believe it supports the 'reservation' required to share a volume between multiple hosts. This is needed for…

we've been using the free community version of deki wiki.. great if you need to give different groups access to portions of the wiki. integrates with AD. Easy to use.

I’m not going to keep harping on this as you’ve obviously made a choice here but I’m going to make a last comment. What makes Windows so special that it needs AV whereas Macs, Linux and Unix machines don’t? Plenty of exploits…

I'd usually just send a request for a quote to 2 competing resellers.. (even using CC) and whoever responds first, gets the sale.. as long as the price is close..

Wish i had the time to even consider snooping! Not that i would.. Most things that i could read are really of no interest to me.. Some things are better left unknown.. I don't take offense though.. I think I've joked about it myself..

after doing an eval, I'm almost ready to declare eset the best fit for us.. the management is straight forward and responsive. (I love that it's not java or web based). Some comparison tests I've come across show that it has a high…

I agree... there's too many ways around not having admin rights.. rights escalation through exploits, etc.. the only way an internet connecting pc is safe without AV is if it's really locked down, with some kind of blacklisting.. or…

I'm in the process of switching my main client from Symatec Endpoint(less) Protection to ESET. ESET had a decent price, they seemed responsive and so far I've had no problems out of it. I don't have a problem with the no AV…

Sorry for the delayed response.. The virus that was transmitted to the Desktop was broadcasting itself across our network, causing havoc with many desktops, not just one. Also, we were lucky that our servers were up to date. That would have caused…

I’ve been trying to rethink a lot of assumptions regarding how networks are built and dumping AV came out of that. It’s always just been a given that you run AV on Windows, but MS has come a long way from windows 95/98. I feel that not…

Free antivirus vs. Paid for AV vs. Firewalls vs. application whitelisting

I'm a big fan of everything opensource or just plain free. I always recommend applications such as openoffice.org to those that really don't need to buy ms office. But I've always been a bit hesitant to say that a free alternative to norton/symantec is good enough. I've always liked clam and avg, but somehow always thought that they'd only catch 99% of the bad stuff, and that 1% is the dealbreaker. The reason I thought that the commercial versions were better is that the company backing the… Continue

Hi Paul,

I'm planning on getting a sysadmin meetup scheduled in NYC in the beginning of May (probably on the 2nd). Since you're in the area, I wanted to let you know about it. I don't have a place to meet yet, but I was figuring on dinner and drinks. Bring your significant other, if you have one, and let any other admins know in the area.

If you're interested, you can reply here or drop me a line at standalone.sysadmin@gmail.com.

Thanks,

--Matt

Hey Paul,

I commented a while back about a sysadmin meetup, but the plans fell through. Well, it's back, and it's going to happen this time.

I'm throwing a sysadmin meetup in NYC at the end of July. It's coinciding with SysAdmin Appreciation Day. I wanted to let you know in case you've got a chance to show up. More information is available here:

http://www.standalone-sysadmin.com/blog/sysadmin-day-get-together/

Don't forget to tell your sysadmin friends to check it out, too!

Thanks,

--Matt
