Hi Richard. We've used the HPIP consoles before but have switched over to the Dell solution (KVM 2162DS) which it more cost effective.  We use our KVMoIP often but find that iLO or DRAC to be more useful in that you can hit the virtual…

Cheers Wesley   That was exactly the sort of thing I had in mind. I was just not sure that such a thing existed and I was struggling to find information. However in the meantime I went ahead and got an Aten CN8000 KEM on the NET Switch which is…

Look at the Lantronix Spider. I use them for clients and think they're great! The Planet used to use them for in-rack KVMoIP.

I need help finding a KVM over IP

I want something that I can connect one end via ethernet to the switch in my rack, configure an IP on it, plug the other end via KVM cables into a server and connect to it remotely.I don't want to get another rack mounted device. Ideally just something I can plug into the server I am working on, drive home and carry on working remotely. This looks like the perfect thing, …See More

Check out http://protolol.com/ I am not sure if I find it funny because of the puns or just because the site exists. Most jokes are jokes about jokes.Still, if there is an audience for this, it is pretty much going to include us lot, so I thought I'd share.Optimist: Glass is half full. Sounds like you handle it in the same way as me; by reasoning with the tester. I did it by cross referencing the CVE number against the Red Hat Errata and then checked each update had been applied in /var/log/yum.log and sending the relevant…

PCI Compliance and Red Hat's backporting policy

For anyone not familiar with the problem; Red Hat use a practice called back porting for ensuring security fixes are applied to software, without also changing the functionality of the software. And they describe how and why they do that at http://www.redhat.com/security/updates/backporting/?sc_cid=3093This has many advantages when trying to provide a stable (as in unchanging) platform for developing on and makes it…See More

Thanks Richard,

On my Linux learning I've gotten about as far a downloading a Debian ISO. I've installed and used Ubuntu in the past for web browsing and to host a bunch of mp3s. (So I wouldn't be bored at work) But I never really focused on the command line with Ubuntu, I just used the GUI, so my plan is to learn to do more from the command line.

Sorry about the blog not accepting your comments. I must have broke the comments while I was updating the blog a few weeks ago. I just thought the lack of new comments was due to people being on vacation as it is summer now. :) Now I know what I'll be fixing at in my spare time.
