Robert Chipperfield Renewing an expired certificate in Exchange 2007

Continuing on a theme of how to fix those niggly little problems in Exchange Server, today it's the turn of this error when starting Outlook:

The cause? An SSL certificate that expired some time last year - the default Exchange self-signed certificate seem

Robert Chipperfield Recovering Exchange Server 2007 Outlook Web Access

With dozens of virtual servers on tens of virtual test networks here in the Exchange division, all getting hammered quite a bit with Naughty Things that Probably Shouldn't Be Done, we tend to break things quite regularly.

One of the more common failures is Outlook Web Access under Exchange Server 2007. One way or another, it just stops working - sometimes in a minor way, sometimes more extensively. This morning, it simply presented me with a blank page after login.

Part of a ne… Continue

Robert Chipperfield Windows 7 iSCSI driver charged with manslauter

My desktop here at work is a rather nice Windows 7 machine - quad core, 8GB, SSD drive (thanks Red Gate!). It's only a few months old, so I was rather shocked to arrive at work this morning to the old friend: a Blue Screen of Death!

A quick reboot, and it seemed fine, but soon after, another crash, then a third after that. Not best pleased at this point, I wandered over to our IS guys to see if they had any ideas. Windows Updates were called into question, but turned up nothing. Then He… Continue

Adam Ruth Quick DCOM Security Reset

DCOM, or Distributed Component Object Model, is a technology in Windows allowing remote communication between programs. WMI, in particular, uses it to communicate. A lot of business oriented server applications use it, as well, to communicate between layers. If you've ever spent any time with DCOM you probably have come to understand just how fragile it can be. When it works, it's like magic, but when it doesn't i

Robert Chipperfield Clustering and replication: the data loss vs. downtime tradeoff

Yesterday I was speaking to a potential customer who was interested in how email archiving could be integrated with their Exchange replication technology. Which got me thinking... How do you trade off potential data loss against extended downtime in a replicated / clustered environment? Simplifying hugely, there's two ways you can handle this: you can either replicate data instantly, and not report that an action is complete until all replicas are consistent, or you do it asynchronously, and l… Continue

Robert Chipperfield High availability: you *are* joking, right?

At the moment, I'm working in Red Gate's Exchange Server Archiver team. One of the great things about the way we work is that I sit just across from Scott, who's one of our sales guys, so as a developer I get to hear what customers and potential customers are asking about, what they wish we did, and what they love. Something that came up this afternoon was a question about recovery of archived messages in the event of a catastrophic failure of the Exchange environment (think: no backups, nothin… Continue

Jason Short Do what I want....

And not what I tell you to do! Pop quiz: What does the following Powershell script do? $MachineName = '.' $reg = [Microsoft.Win32.RegistryKey]::OpenRemoteBaseKey('LocalMachine', $MachineName) $regKey= $reg.OpenSubKey("SYSTEM\\CurrentControlSet\\Control\\Session Manager\\Memory Management",$true) $regkey.SetValue('PagedPoolSize','FFFFFFFF') Answer: Cause pandemonium, as it turns out. If the registry key already exists, the SetValue method helpfully converts it to the appropriate type (Stri… Continue

John McGrath Why "Running IT As a Business" Is a Bad Idea

Slashdot had a an interesting article regarding the way IT departments are run... The slashdot article: http://it.slashdot.org/story/10/01/19/2029259/Why-Running-IT-As-a-Business-Is-a-Bad-Idea The article: Run IT as a business -- why that's a train wreck waiting to happen http://infoworld.com/print/108477 Food for thought. Tsahy Shapsa Protecting Company Data From Rogue Insiders

I just came across (yet another) good article by Kevin Beaver called Tests for securing the internal windows network . Kevin is an independent security expert, so he can’t be blamed for being vendor biased. Interestingly enough, the 1st step out of 3 he lists is “Test for share, directory, and (if needed) file permi… Continue

Adam Ruth Wet Your Whistle

It has been said that being a Windows System Administrator can drive you to drink.* Well, I've decided to make that official. Charge your glasses with your favourite beverage and prepare... If you prefer beverages of a more stimulating nature (Jolt, Monster, Coffee, or Yerba Matte laced with amphetamines) then prepare to bounce off the walls for several… Continue

Matt Simmons Rise of the hippopotamus

This isn't a particularly sysadmin-y entry, but that's ok. I've noticed lately that hippopotamuses...err hippopotami(?) are on the rise in the public consciousness. Last year, my wife's grandmother entertained us at Christmas by singing "I want a hippopotamus for christmas". The fact that she threatened to do it for the 6 months leading up to it may have been the cause of her getting something like a dozen hippo-related gifts that year. If you watch American TV, you might have seen the E-Trade… Continue

Thomas Stensitzki Mailscape Version 4.5 released

After being part of the beta program for Mailscape 4.5 and after using Mailscape 4.4 for over a year now, I think that it is time hat a lot people know about the product. Beside very powerful monitoring functions for Exchange servers the software provides the possibility to monitor any Windows service you like. Additionally Mailscape is capable of monitoring SMTP queue folders on the local harddisks of SMTP 3rd party relay servers. The use of monitoring policies makes it really easy to apply th… Continue

Isaac Isaac? The ghetto is calling, they want their servers back.

Our core infrastructure is highly redundant and can survive almost any failure. But this (needlessly long) story isn’t about that; no, it’s about an outlying building that houses our execs and their staff. Given the small amount of staff and their (supposedly!) non-critical needs we only have a single small server running VMware. Recently this server has started rebooting randomly. What makes this really bad is that even though this box isn’t supposed to do anything critical over time semi-impor… Continue

Wesley "Nonapeptide" APC creates unobtrusive equipment racks that look like furniture.

This is basically a copy and paste from my own blog, but I wanted to get some targeted feedback from fellow admins on this topic. Plenty of admins/consultants have to deal with small offices and branch offices that need a server or three, a firewall and maybe some switches. But where to put them? Usually those devices end up being bunkmates with mops and 5-gallon containers of Janitor in a Drum. However, APC has created their NetShelter CX series that looks like an unobtrusive pieces of office… Continue

Adam Ruth Question on Support Options

Isaac Dear vendors: Post your prices or go DIAF

It’s that magical time of year again when I go shopping for all the shiny new toys I’ll be buying in January. But once again I find that some vendors apparently enjoy wasting time by hiding the costs of their products. Here’s the thing; don’t make me call you, schedule a sales meeting then talk for hours about our current needs and directions, then lecture me about how much the competition sucks until finally you come out with the price. Look, maybe I think your product is the greatest thing ev… Continue

Wesley "Nonapeptide" Small Office Disaster Recovery == Disaster (--Recovery)

The office is small. Really small. So small that you can answer the front door with one hand while you use the other hand to spray roach repellent around the back door. The mobile workforce that the office directly supports is equally small and I'm partially responsible for supporting both of them. I say "partially" because I work part time... on a volunteer basis... from 1,000 miles away. The remaining part of the time that I'm not helping the office the users create their own "solutions". By "… Continue
