
Many websites/blogs/forums provided steps to upgrade from E2K/E2K3 to E2k7/E2k10, but not all of them provided the workarounds or possible problems emerged during upgrade. Credit goes to Henrik Walter (from msexchange.org) for providing detailed tutorials for transitioning Exchange 2k/2k3 to 2k7. The followings are some issues/errors I've stumbled on while transitioning from E2k3 (Ent Sp2 32-bit) to E2k7 (Ent 64-bit).
Problem: Exchange 2007 SP1 may not install the ‘Mailbox Role’ under Windows 2008 R2 EnterpriseWorkaround:
1. Navigate to E2k7 installation CD right‐click on the setup.exe choose Properties click on the
Compatibility tab under the Compatibility Mode click the ‘Run this program in the Vista (SP1) checkbox
2. Rerun the setup.exe to install the ‘Mailbox Role’
Problem: E2k7 SP2 will not be able to update on Windows 2008 R2 Enterprise.Problem: A problem occurred while trying to use your mailbox (in OWA). Please contact technical support for your organization. (MS KB 94116)Workaround:
1. Launch ADUC
2. Enable ‘Advance features…’ from the View
3. Find the affected User(s) right‐click Properties Security tab Advanced button check ‘Inherit from the
Parent…’
4. Click Apply and hit Ok
5. Try access in OWA with the affected User(s) again
To install ‘Mailbox Role’ only for E2k7The following services must be started and/or on automatic mode: Computer Browser, Remote Registry, TCP/IP NetbiosHelper, and Windows Firewall
Problem: Error message when trying to remove/uninstall individual role in E2k7 (especially the Mailbox only role).1. Command‐line to remove role: .\setup.com /mode: uninstall /role: MB (mailbox role) you may receive the following message:
An error occurred. The error code was 3221685466. The message was the service is already registered.Workaround:
1. Go to the Regedit navigate to this path: HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Exchang\v8.0\MailboxRole
2. Find and change the ‘Action’ key from Uninstall to Install
3. Try to remove/uninstall the role again
Problem: Message --> Email addresses policies created with legacy version of Exchange must be upgraded using the ‘Set‐Email AddressPolicy’ task.Workaround:
Use the EMS command: set‐emailaddresspolicy “DefaultPolicy” –IncludedRecipients AllRecipients (after all mailboxes have been moved from legacy server to E2k7)
